NEWBURYPORT — Magalie Yolanda Torres-Rowe of Lynn, the executive director and founder of Latina Center Maria, is the recipient of the third annual Peter J. Gomes Service Award. 

Torres-Rowe is a mother of four and a native of northern Peru. She has taught at the Iberoamericana University in Torreon, Mexico, and in 1998, she received a full scholarship from the World Bank to study for a doctorate in community economic development at Southern New Hampshire University. She has also earned a master's in teaching Spanish from Rivier University, and last year, she received her master's degree from the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College. She teaches in Lynn schools.

In 2016, she founded Latina Center Maria, a women's ministry that works to empower the Latino community through education, advocacy, partnerships and services. 

Salem Congressman Seth Moulton announced the winner Sunday morning at Parker River Wildlife Refuge's headquarters and visitor center. 

"In a time when so many are actively working to make it harder for our Spanish-speaking friends to fully participate in the social, economic, and cultural fabric of our nation, Magalie has stepped up — providing education and resources in Spanish that allow everyone to feel included in our community," Moulton said in a statement. "Her dedication to service and her resourcefulness in fixing this problem are an inspiration to us all. I’m proud to give her this award in Reverend Gomes’ memory."

The award is given to someone in Moulton's 6th District who epitomizes the qualities of integrity, compassion and commitment to community that were the bedrock of the late Rev. Professor Peter J. Gomes' teachings. Gomes was a professor of religion at Harvard Divinity School, and a well-known preacher at Harvard Memorial Church where Moulton attended throughout college. He inspired Moulton, who served four tours of duty in Iraq as a Marine Corps infantry officer, to live a life of service. 

“Public service is important to me because I believe that each of us can make a better place to live, by loving, helping, and supporting each other,” Torres-Rowe said in a statement.

The other finalists announced for the 2018 award were Kristine Babcock of Beverly, the veterans service coordinator at North Shore Community College; Marblehead firefighter Timothy Doane; Marblehead resident Karen Finocchio Lubeck, a volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association, and Richard Reed, Bedford's town administrator.

This is the second year in a row the winner of the award has come from Lynn. Last year, the award's second recipient, was Jason McCuish of Lynn. Andrew DeFranza of Beverly, the executive director of Harborlight Community Partners, was the first winner of the Gomes award.

A day of community service at the refuge, spearheaded by Moulton, followed the ceremony.

The founder of a Spanish-language resource center that offers spiritual and emotional support for women received US Representative Seth Moulton’s annual service award on Plum Island Sunday morning.

The Democratic congressman gave Magalie Yolanda Torres-Rowe the Peter J. Gomes Service Award during a ceremony at the Parker River Wildlife Refuge, according to a statement from Moulton’s office.

Torres-Rowe, of Lynn, is the founder and executive director of the Latina Center Maria, an organization that offers as professional development and educational resources in Spanish, according to its website.

“In a time when so many are actively working to make it harder for our Spanish-speaking friends to fully participate in the social, economic, and cultural fabric of our nation, Magalie has stepped up — providing education and resources in Spanish that allow everyone to feel included in our community,” Moulton said in the statement.

LYNN — The Latina Center Maria will begin offering English as a second language classes for parents next month at the Demakes Family YMCA.
Magalie Torres-Rowe, executive director of the Center, and YMCA Senior Branch Executive Director Andrea Baez collaborated on the initiative, which they say will provide parents with the tools to help their children succeed in school.
“Parents who can talk to their children’s teachers are more aware of what’s going on with their kids,” Torres-Rowe said. “I call my students’ parents all the time and I tell the kids that I am on the same team with their mom. We want you to succeed, not just in class, but in life.”

 Latina Center Maria organized the 'Diploma in Business and Education at the University of Massachusetts - Boston, entirely in Spanish. It was an academic event, taught by renowned Professors from Harvard University, Boston College, UMASS, and Experts in their areas; to give opportunity to Latinos in the USA who do not yet master the English language and who cannot continue their continuous professional training in universities and for Spanish speakers who arrived from several latin american countries.
